Timo Laine’s Journal

Taking life philosophically.

Machiavelli, blogs, and the freshness of information

28 December 2009

David Rundle has commented on my Machiavelli pages some time ago on his blog:

There is the personal site of Timo Laine; this Finnish student provides an impressive listing of texts available in Italian and English (though it exemplifies the problems of keeping up-to-date in the digital world).

I appreciate the kind words, and it is true that recently I have not been working enough to keep the page up to date. I will also say that Rundle’s own comments have been useful to me in choosing which editions to use in my research.

However, I will use this opportunity to criticize Rundle for posting his listing as a blog entry. This kind of information is not particularly suitable for blogs, as it ought to be updated continuously, whereas a blog is best suited for information that is not modified later.

Also, on a lighter note, keeping up-to-date in the digital world should not be more difficult than it is in the analog world. It is only that in the digital world it is much easier to notice when someone (yours truly in this case) is just being lazy.
